True and lasting empowerment begins when Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities take the lead in shaping their own future. They understand their challenges, strengths and priorities best, and their voices are key in designing sustainable solutions.
We conducted a sensitization workshop with the Lekurruki community, led by the Naitutum Lekurruki Women’s CBO, to discuss the future of Indigenous heritage, its preservation for future generations, and pathways towards sustainable livelihoods.
During the workshop, community members actively shared their ideas through participatory mind-mapping sessions, highlighting what works best for them in advancing empowerment and preserving Indigenous Knowledge. We also presented insights gathered from our experience.
The session further featured a documentary highlighting the inspiring work of women groups within the Laikipia and Samburu landscapes, as well as valuable lessons from an expert who founded a successful cultural women’s group in the landscape.
These conversations continue to demonstrate the power of community-led action in preserving culture, strengthening livelihoods and creating lasting impact.
